CLIENT'S QUESTION

Prior to receiving this translation I also received a translation which I have attached. I noticed that the translation was slightly different. I prefer the look of your translation but I just want to check why the translation is different - is it because the other translation incorrect? It is just that I am having the tattoo performed next week and want the translation to be perfect. Thank you again for your help!

Regards, Geoff

OUR ANSWER

Sanskrit is a highly complex language which follows a technical protocol based system for forming noun & verb forms.

Below is the word by word technical analysis of both translations:

A. जीवनमन्विष्य (Correct Translation - provided by us) : This is composite sentence made of जीवनम्‌ + अन्विष्य

1. जीवनम्‌ - The root word here is जीवन meaning life. It is the object of the sentence. In Sanskrit, the object is put in accusative case hence accusative singular of जीवन was used i.e. जीवनम्‌

2. अन्विष्य - The root verb here is इष्‌ belonging to 4th conjugation parasmaipada meaning to wish. When the prefix अनु is added to it, it becomes अनु + इष्‌ = अन्विष्‌ & the meaning changes to search, explore or seek. To this is suffixed the identifier of 4th conjugation i.e. य Thus it becomes अन्विष्‌ + य = अन्विष्य As this sentence is said as being spoken to a person i.e. [You] explore life, imperative second person singular is used. In this case, it is indicated by absence of any further additional suffixes & the verb form अन्विष्य is retained without further modifications.

Joining together जीवनम्‌ + अन्विष्य , the sentence जीवनमन्विष्य is formed.

B. जीवनम्‌ अन्वेष्‌ (Wrong Translation - provided by other translator)

1. जीवनम्‌ - The first is correctly translated as explained above.

2. अन्वेष्‌ - The translator has used proper prefix अनु with इष्‌ But has not combined them properly. Instead of combining them as अन्विष्‌ [an-wish], they have been combined as अन्वेष्‌ [an-wesh]. The identifier of 4th conjugation य is also missing. Thus अन्वेष्‌ verb form was generated instead of the correct verb form अन्विष्य
